After graduating John worked as a Research Officer at the Waitangi Tribunal and Senior Historian at the Crown Forestry Rental Trust. During this time he researched and wrote reports on historical claims and commissioned and managed research on forestry claims, he also appeared as an expert witness before the Waitangi Tribunal.
John has been in private practice since 1998 and is one of the founding directors of Koning Webster Lawyers. His initial experience was in civil litigation but for the last 10 years he has practised almost exclusively in Maori land law, resource management and estate litigation.
John has been an adjunct lecturer at Te Piringa/Faculty of Law, University of Waikato, teaching Maori Land Law. He also writes regular articles on Maori land law for the New Zealand Conveyancing Law & Practice Bulletin.
